Every household has go-to recipes or meals they love just as every household has meals they love but aren’t necessarily always the healthiest choice. Perhaps you’re looking to make a few conscious swops to improve the nutritional value or veg intake of your meal or maybe you just want to enjoy your favorite meal more often with a healthier twist. Whatever the reason then here are some simple and easy swops you can make to your favorite meals, so you don’t compromise on taste.
Caesar Salad
When you think of a Caesar salad typically chicken comes to mind. What is more, it is topped your traditional Caesar salad with dressing, croutons, parmesan and bacon bits. Unfortunately lathering your salad in the dressing and fried bits of bread and bacon negates the salad from being the healthier option. A great way to get your Caesar salad back in line is to replace the chicken with lamb, limit the amount of dressing, and forgo the croutons and bacon bits. Oh and easy on the cheese. Further opting for lamb over chicken will render the croutons and bacon bits (and even a large amount of the dressing) unnecessary as the lamb will pack your salad full of flavor.
Cauliflower rice
Cauliflower rice is the perfect alternative to the carb-heavy white rice that is served up regularly. Switching to cauliflower rice can help reduce the feeling of bloating and uncomfortable fullness after meals and provide you with an extra portion of vegetables. Some of the best dishes to serve cauliflower rice with are chili or curry as they carry such a strong flavor that you may not even notice the swop.
Lettuce Wraps
Tortilla wraps, burritos, and fajitas are great family meals that can come full of flavor. Some wraps however can contain as many carbs as two slices of bread, which can mount up if you are enjoying three a night or wrapping rice and beans to make a burrito. If you are looking to lower your carb intake then consider swopping your flour tortilla wrap for a lettuce wrap. It doesn’t have to be at every mealtime or even swop just one or two of your flour fajitas for a lettuce wrap. It can offer up a great lighter alternative that still maximizes the flavor of the filling.
Tortilla pizza
Pizza has been a family favorite meal for decades, but it’s less than beneficial nutritional value is well known. If you or your kids love a pizza but don’t love its calorie content then try a tortilla pizza alternative. Instead of using a typical dough pizza base swop it for a tortilla. You can then top this with a tomato puree, ketchup mix, and add whatever toppings you want. Simply bake it in the oven for a few minutes and voila you have yourself a lighter, healthier alternative to the traditional pizza you know and love. Tortilla pizzas can be great served up for a fun lunch or as part of your main evening meal and can be customed to replicate your favorite pizza.
