Keeping yourself and your home comfortable and cool in the extreme summer heat can be tricky. With the US set to experience some record-busting temperatures again this year, cooling off and avoiding excessive heat can make your life much easier and facilitate a more comfortable living experience.

So how can you ensure you and your home are prepared for the hotter weather and that it supports you as much as possible?

Check Your AC

Your AC is likely going to be working overtime this summer, and if you want to avoid any catastrophic failures when you need it the most, it’s crucial to get it checked and/or serviced. This proactive step will ensure its current health and status, preventing any unpleasant surprises on the hottest day of the year. Book in with your local AC engineers for a service to help improve air quality functionality and ensure your home can cope with the demands of the summer heat.

Block it Out

The best way to keep the heat out is to simply block it using curtains or blinds to stop it from coming into the house.

What you want to be doing come the summer is opening your windows and doors on the coolest parts of the day to let the cool air in, and then, once temperatures rise, close the windows and doors, including curtains and blinds, to block the heat entering via the windows. If you have windows that are in shaded areas or cooler parts of your home, then open these to let the air circulate until the sun reaches those parts and close and block the windows out, and hotter air enters.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water isn’t the only way to stay hydrated; using a range of moisture-rich foods and drinking frequently can help you avoid becoming dehydrated, which can increase your discomfort. You can also drink more fruits like strawberries and watermelon, eat yogurt, ice lollies, and celery, and drink milk to help you remain hydrated.

Use Fans Correctly

If you want to help circulate airflow or don’t have AC to keep you cool, strategically using fans can be a powerful tool in your home cooling arsenal. You can place a bowl of ice in front of the fan so that it blows through it to disperse moisture through the air, cooling it down by using damp sheets over a window or door and blowing the fan through it; place your fans by an open window to help push the air into a room when it’s cooler to help you maximize the cool air entering your home too for improved benefits.

Keep It Dark

Keeping the room dark can significantly contribute to a cooler and more comfortable environment. By turning lights off, you are reducing the heat in a room, which can be a small but effective way to manage the temperature. This simple trick can help you feel more at ease, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
