Some people are blessed with lush hair that has plenty of volume and looks great without too much work. If you’re one of the unlucky ones that is burdened with fine, straight hair, it can often feel like whatever you do, you can’t get it looking good. Fine hair is always difficult but that doesn’t mean it’s a lost cause, you just have to know how to handle it properly. A lot of people give up on their fine hair and just let it do whatever it wants to do, but if you follow these tips, you can win the war against fine hair and get it looking how you’ve always wanted it.

Wash It Everyday
You might have heard people say that you shouldn’t wash your hair every single day because it dries out and it’s actually better to do it every couple of days so you can let the natural oils in the hair build up. That’s true for people with thicker hair and it will be healthier if they don’t wash it all the time but it’s a different story if you’ve got fine hair. Fine hair is a lot more prone to getting greasy so if you’re not washing it regularly, it’s going to go limp and look bad. You should be washing it every day but be careful what products you’re using on it.

Know Your Products
Choosing the right products is key because a lot of the products that are great for thicker hair are going to be bad for your fine hair. A lot of people with fine hair make the mistake of trying to combat it using loads of products but that’s just going to dry it out and do a load of damage, and you won’t get the results that you want. What you should be doing is picking products that are specifically designed for fine hair. You can find out more about these products here. Using volumizing products that are specifically for boosting fine hair. There are mousses and gels that you can use to add volume to your hair as well as shampoos for everyday use that will give you more volume generally.

Sometimes, the mousses and gels don’t work for people and if you’ve found that, you could try a texturising spray instead. They’re a lot less harsh on your hair and they often give results that are just as good as the mousses and gels.

Whenever you’re trying to style your hair in a particularly big way, hairspray is your friend. It’ll hold it and give you that volume you’re looking for, and don’t be afraid to use a lot. Just remember that hairspray isn’t the best thing for your hair and it can dry it out a lot so you want to avoid going for styles that need a lot of hairspray all of the time and make sure you’re using natural products that keep your hair from drying out.

Dry Your Hair Fully
People with thick hair can leave it damp and go to bed or leave the house and it’ll be fine, but you don’t have that luxury. If somebody with fine hair sleeps on it while it’s damp, they’ll wake up with it all over the place. The same goes if you go out in the wind with damp hair. Making sure that you dry it properly after you wash it is vital if you want to keep it under control. However, you’ve got to make sure you’re drying it properly. When you’re towel drying your hair, you can do a lot of damage if you’re rough with it and it’ll be sticking out all over the place. Instead, you should be dabbing it gently and using a hairdryer where possible.

When you’re drying it with a hairdryer, doing it upside down is a great little tip. It seems like a crazy thing to do but hanging upside down while you dry it will add a surprising amount of volume. If you add a little mousse before drying it upside down, you can get some great volume in your hair.

Taking care of fine hair is a constant battle and it’s going to take a lot of time which means your morning routine is usually going to be longer than you want it to be. But there is one benefit to having fine hair that thick haired people don’t have; it looks great in a ponytail. If all else fails, you can always just put it up and deal with it later when you’ve got a bit more time on your hands.
