How to be smart about your mid-day snacking choices

Snacking is something we all do, even when we swear we don’t! After all, you’re sometimes not hungry enough for a full meal, or maybe you don’t feel quite full enough after lunch or dinner. And snacking isn’t a bad thing to do, but the foods you snack on need to be diverse.

All in all, it’s not just the kids that could do with some new snacks – you do too! But if you’re getting sick and tired of just breaking out a chocolate bar or the donuts just don’t do it for you anymore, you need some new ideas. And we’ve got them in abundance for you below.

Make More at Home

If you make snacks at home, you don’t have to waste money on brand names or packets of mini chocolate bars that are only half full. Instead you can come up with a full plate of something absolutely glorious to dig into, and from only 20 minutes effort in the kitchen.

Remember, snack foods should come in bite size portions, so you don’t need to go all out here. Keep it simple, keep it small, and try to keep to the time above. A good snack is filling and tasty, but just that – a snack. This will also help you to keep the cleanup process nice and quick too! Or, you can make something like a no-bake vegan biscoff cheesecake and have a little piece each day through the week. This means that you’ll only need to prepare food once.

Cook Up a Big Batch and Save for Later

Cooking up a big batch of easy to eat foods, such as southern fried oysters or chicken fingers, is a good way to have a tasty snack always in the house. And when you’ve cooked it yourself, you know exactly what’s gone into it! That’s good for keeping to a diet, or for simply ensuring you get enough protein alongside those carbs.

So make twice the amount you actually plan on, and then freeze at least half for later on. The next time you’re in a peckish mood, you can get the bag out of the freezer and simply stick your snacks in the microwave – what could be easier for healthy, more diverse snacking?

Deconstruct Your Favorite Meals

If you’re not sure what kind of snacks you might like, think about your favorite meals. They can be some great inspiration for you here. For example, if you like a burger, you can simply make a small sandwich with a similarly meaty filling, just like the pic below. It’s simply your favourite dish but smaller!

In truth, it doesn’t matter what meals you like here, you can just take the ingredients and eat them on their own. A bit of cheese, some salami, even some fresh vegetables with a dip to cover them in will fill you up before it’s time for lunch. Keep this in mind the next time you’re mooching around the kitchen.

Having a snack is no bad thing; just make sure you’ve got plenty of snacks ready! Prepare a good portion at home and freeze some for later.
