Having hobbies is easier when you’ve got a lot of money. But that doesn’t mean that those of us without money shouldn’t have hobbies. It’s important to have passions and interests that you can pursue in your free time. They can be a source of stress relief, a way to make friends and a way of challenging oneself. Below are just a few tips on how to enjoy hobbies on a tight budget.
Rent/hire equipment
Certain hobby equipment can be very expensive. Consider whether renting or hiring out equipment could be a cheaper option. There are specialist companies out there that provide band instrument rentals, sports equipment rentals, photography equipment hire and craft tool hire. You’ll get access to high quality equipment. However, you will have to remember that you don’t own the equipment – it will eventually need to be returned and you need to be very careful not to damage it.
Buy used equipment
It’s possible to buy used surfboards, sewing machines, bicycles, pianos and all manner of other hobbyist gear online cheaply. Used equipment is much cheaper than brand new equipment – and you have the freedom to sell it or modify it. Of course, some used equipment can be in poor condition, so you need to be careful where you buy equipment from. Some of the best second-hand sites for buying such equipment include eBay, Amazon, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, Preloved and Shpock.
Take advantage of free online resources
When developing hobby skills, you might not be able to afford to attend a class or take private lessons. However, it may still be possible to self-teach yourself certain skills using online video tutorials, blog guides or other resources. Many of these resources are free. In fact, you may be able to find yourself sites for niche free resources like free crochet patterns and free guitar tabs.
Learn how to do DIY repairs
The cost of repairing certain equipment like bicycles, guitars or skateboards can be expensive. However, you may be able to save costs by learning how to make repairs yourself. You can find free resources online that can teach you how to repair this equipment. Just be wary that certain repairs may require specialist tools – in some cases, it may cost you less to take your equipment to a repair centre instead of buying the tools to fix it yourself.
Turn your hobby into an income
It may be possible to fund your hobby by finding a way of making money from it. Ways to make money from a hobby could include selling crafts, starting a blog, making YouTube videos or teaching lessons. This is usually only possible when you reach a certain level of competency. However, you don’t necessarily have to be an expert. Of course, making money from a hobby could take some of the joy out of it by forcing you to treat it as a job, so you need to be carefully selective as to which money-making methods you choose.
