If you are a keen BBQ lover, then you are probably always excited when it comes to this time of year. The summer is obviously the one time of year when you are going to be getting truly ready for a BBQ, whether you generally do it on your own or with your immediate family, or you like to invite lots of friends over and extended family for an event. In either case, there is one major ingredient to a great BBQ that you are going to want to be aware of and practice, and it’s knowing how to cook amazing BBQ food.
There are a few tricks and tips that you can use to improve your BBQ cooking considerably. In this post, we are going to take a look at a number of these, so you can hopefully start creating truly delicious and amazing food on your BBQ at home. Let’s take a look right now.
Try Different BBQ Types
There are of course many types of BBQ that you can use, in terms of the actual equipment, and playing around with different types is important if you want to learn how to cook the best BBQ food you possibly can. The different types operate in very different ways, so it’s something that you are absolutely going to want to be aware of if you are keen on improving your BBQ cooking skills. Let’s take a brief look at each in turn and how they tend to differ.
First of all, you have charcoal. This is the classic BBQ type, and it is easy to use while also being delicious in the food it produces. Generally, food cooked on a coal BBQ will have a good charred effect to it, and you’ll find that its flavor of it can be quite unique, and certainly distinct from other BBQ types. However, on the downside, it can take longer to get it to the heat you need – and you also have less control over that heat. Of course, you can put food at the edges of the BBQ for lower heat, if you need to.
Then you have gas BBQs. These are a more modern variety of BBQ, and they are generally very quick to get hot, as well as providing plenty of opportunity for heat control, which can be useful if you are doing delicate cooking, or you want to make sure you cook your steak perfectly for example. Generally, the gas used on gas BBQ sets is propane – click here for an example of how you can safely source residential propane for your own BBQ set.
Another type of BBQ is wood, but this is much less common than either gas or coal. With wood, however, you get that famous woodsmoked taste and aroma that plenty of people really adore in their BBQ-d meats. However, you can achieve the same effect, or similar, by simply adding some wood chips to a coal BBQ.
As you can see, there are a lot of divergences here, so make sure that you are making your decision well – or better yet, try them all out at different times.
Get Your BBQ Hot Early
When it comes to the actual day of cooking, you will want to make sure that you get your BBQ hot nice and early. The sooner you do this, the more likely it is that you are going to have the temperatures that you need to be working with, and you’ll find that it’s quicker to cook everything in general too. How early you need to get it going will depend on the type of BBQ you are using, as you will have gathered from the discussion above.
Also, make sure that you are aware of the different temperatures around the BBQ, and that you use them as appropriate to achieve different effects. If you are doing that right, it’s going to help you in a big way to produce amazing food every time, so it’s something that you will definitely want to think about. All in all, temperature control is a really central and important part of BBQing food, so make sure that you are thinking carefully about it.
Prepare Your Food
There are many things to consider when it comes to preparing your food, and what you need to do all depends on what you are actually cooking and how you like your food to be cooked. Steak is a perfect example of this in action. Generally, most people prefer steak with a little redness in the middle, which means that you need to be careful about how you cook it. But the preparation is actually quite simple. Usually to prepare steak you just need to make sure you have it out at room temperature before cooking, and that you rub oil on it and season it.
With a little bit of seasoning, you are going to be on course for the perfect steak. The same is true for most other meats that you might be keen on cooking. It’s actually all quite simple and as long as you remember that, you should find that you can produce the sort of food you will really love to eat.
Remember The Side Dishes
On top of that, you should make sure that you are also thinking about the side dishes that need to go with a BBQ. If you don’t prepare side dishes, then it’s going to be a much less complete event, and you’ll likely not be as happy – and nor will your guests! Remembering the side dishes is all about just having a few salads to choose from, as well as other smaller dishes that might come in handy, like skewers with vegetables and prawns for example, as well as some cheese dishes. Try to be generous, and everyone will be a lot more satisfied with the food.
Don’t Forget to Cool Off!
The summers are hot, being around the grill is hot, and you can’t forget about cooling off, even when you’re hosting! So whether you’re the one doing most of the grilling or even most of the hosting under the blazing sun, you’re still going to have to keep yourself cooled off. It’s up to you how you’d like to do it, such as with a cold glass of water and a cooling towel while sitting underneath a parasol or awning or even just going into the house for a bit once an hour to sit by the AC. But generally speaking, you can’t neglect to do this whatsoever; in order to be a fabulous host, you need to feel your best!
As you can see, there are a few things to think about to ensure that you are cooking amazing BBQ food.
